THE LILTING WALL

Maya Deren- Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946)

the Sagrada Familia is such a surreal and geometrical dream, I want to go check it out again this summer to see how much has changed since the last time I was there

There are parrots, I can hear them.
On the window sill,
The kitchen counter,
The edges of my hips,
Single eyes blinking, a black bead
Floating in a small handful of saturated color,
I can’t move.
Maybe they think I am sleeping.
I can’t tell where they are coming from but, I feel their feathers on my thighs.
A breeze sweeps me under the sheets and I fall and fall and fall

and fall
and fall.

The parrots, they huddle at the top looking down. All the beads audible, like dropping water.

I am in a deep pit. I dig through the side with my hands. Over and over. My nails hurt. Over and over. Blink blink blink. They leave. Silence. Dirt falling. Soft sounds and breathing. I break through unexpectedly.

Into a white room I fall to the ground. The dirt doesn’t follow. There are 6 people in a 3X3 row of red chairs. They get up one by one and join hands against the wall. I stay on the floor and just look up at them. I can’t tell whether they are male or female. Each one opens their mouth and a parrot flys out. I look above and there is no ceiling, just open sky. Warm sunshine and parrots above with white clouds, floating on a sea of blue. I look back around me and the room is gone. The people are gone. Just a park with a lonely man on a bench. He comes up to me and hands me a slip of paper. I am on the ground on an orange blanket made of knitted yarn. All the grass here is dead and yellowed, dehydrated.

I open the paper and it has a symbol on it. I touch it and it appears on my skin. It disappears from the paper.

I had a really surreal dream last night and I really want to go back. I was somewhere out in the countryside with this man, he was probably like 5-6 years older than me, and he had this huge platform at the top of this tall ladder in his backyard. We climbed to the top of the ladder and looked out ahead. There was this big field with billowing dried grass, it must’ve been fall time. Anyways he handed me a notepad and told me to touch different points on the paper with a pen. Each time I did, an image appeared floating above the middle of the field, it’s span gigantic. I saw the back of someone’s head at one point among other things that are too hazy to remember now.
